The Fear of Missing Out Something Real

Justin Bariso, the author of ‘EQ Applied: The Real World Guide To Emotional Intelligence’, coined the word JOMO — the joy of missing out.

While it is an interesting solution to the current FOMO that plagues our social media experience, it is still only a temporary solution. JOMO is a good start because it allows us to be comfortable with who we are and what we have. Mutual isolation has its benefits in this new-age digital world, but it is not sustainable. There has to be a next step, one that opens our main door and allows us to step outside and be as comfortable with our local surroundings, the people and the experiences, as we are with ourselves.

After all, the want of belongingness, meeting people in real and doing things of interest by stepping out of our home, is innate to us humans.

YOU JUST SENT A HAPPY SMILEY. THEN, WHY THE LONG FACE?

Why is it that we want to be seen happy on social media but in reality we are not?

Why do we keep crumbling under the social peer pressure?

Why do we keep scrolling, jumping from info to info, hating everything on the way?

Why do we fear missing out things on social media but we don’t fear missing out real experiences?

What is it that makes us happy?

When are we going to achieve that ultimate satisfaction?

When do we start believing that we are ready to go out and face the world again?

THE ANSWER IS IN OUR EYES

We just need to look somewhere else. Focus on things that inspire an action within us. We must believe that this pursuit of happiness is an endless road. So, we must change lanes towards something that will get us out of our safe house we are locked in right now. We must start believing in the power of real connections. That the world is not as mean as it looks.

Most importantly, we need to believe that the virtual demons that we carry within us, can’t face the bright rays of reality, for even a second.

So, if we ask you, what more do you fear missing out — making the Dalgona Coffee and joining the trend; or heading out for a simple coffee with someone interesting around your neighbourhood?

What do you say?
